Financial Mathematics Masters Seminar
Attendance in the Financial Mathematics Masters Seminar is required in every semester in which a student is enrolled (at least three). The aim of these seminar courses is to provide
- a forum for students to read about, orally present, prepare written reports on, and discuss recent methodological developments in the financial mathematics literature;
- an interface for firms to share with students problems of interest to the financial community;
- professional consulting opportunities and internships for students;
- a forum for the presentation/discussion (by industry professionals, students, and faculty) of state-of-the-art practice and issues.
Every semester the seminar will begin with discussions of general principles for giving high-quality presentations. During both semesters, occasional outside speakers will be brought in to give presentations. Some seminars will consist of group discussions of a specific current new topic or a recent journal article.
In the Fall semester, the seminar will be attended by first- and second-year students. The second-year students will be required to give presentations to the group, thus providing these students with an opportunity to practice their skills, at a time coinciding with the time when they will be expected to be interviewing for jobs. The first-year students will be given an opportunity to critique these presentations.
In the Spring semester, students will read the literature and give short presentations. Some of these presentations will be organized as group presentations and others will be individual presentations.
