Communication Skills Requirement

It is unquestionable that well-developed communication skills are critical for a successful career, and this is particularly true in the business world.  Attention to students’ communication skills will contribute to a thriving program as it will enhance the ability to place students after graduation.

Students will be required to demonstrate capabilities in both written and oral communications. The summer orientation will provide students with preliminary instruction, and the winter intersession’s Communications Practicum will provide further guidance as well. The Topics in Financial Mathematics seminar will provide an environment for continual attention to mastery of skills in this critical area.  Students will be required to give oral presentations in the Topics in Financial Mathematics Finance Seminar.  These presentations will be critiqued and students exhibiting deficiencies in their oral presentation skills will be expected to address these deficiencies.

Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in their writing during the seminar course as well. One written assignment in the Mathematical Finance Seminar will be used, via repeated revisions, for helping to train students to become more proficient in writing.
