Admissions Criteria
Prospective students for this program should ideally have completed a Bachelor’s level degree in Engineering, Mathematics, the Sciences, Finance or Economics. In addition, candidates should ideally have completed undergraduate-level courses in
• Calculus, through multivariable calculus
• Linear algebra
• Differential equations
• Probability and statistics
• Microeconomics and macroeconomics
• Computer programming (e.g., in C++)
Admissions will otherwise conform to the standards for the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department in the Whiting School of Engineering. This includes the following as part of the Admissions/Application process:
• Statement of Purpose
• Transcripts (original)
• Letters of Recommendation (3)
• GRE
• TOEFL or IELTS (for international applicants)
• Supplementary Course Form
• GRE Subject (optional)
The deadline for applications is January 15th, students will be notified about Admissions decisions by March 15th.
Admissions Process
The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University welcomes your interest in its Financial Mathematics Master's program.
To ensure timely consideration of your application, please complete the items in the following checklist at your earliest convenience.
- Read the self
evaluation checklist before you start the application
process.
Note in particular that under University guidelines, exceptions to the TOEFL- score criteria appearing in the checklist will be granted only in extraordinary cases. - Complete the online JHU APPLICATION, including personal statement, signature page, and non-refundable $75 application fee. When you apply online, be sure to indicate
(1) Degree as M.S.E., Financial Mathematics, and
(2) Departmental Concentration/Specialization as Financial Mathematics.
- Complete the supplementary course form , providing detailed information about your mathematical background, and return it to the Graduate Admissions office.
- Arrange for scores on the GRE General and GRE Advanced Test in Mathematics (or in your undergraduate major) to be sent to the department by the Educational Testing Service. (Photocopies are unacceptable and will be discarded.) Applicants are encouraged to take the GRE as early as possible during the academic year preceeding entrance. Please note that the GRE Advanced Test in Mathematics is recommended, but is not required.
- If English is not your native language, arrange for TOEFL Examination scores to be sent to the department by the Educational Testing Service. (Photocopies are not acceptable, and will be discarded.)
- The GRE code for applying to graduate programs at The Johns Hopkins School of Engineering is 5332 and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics code is 0702. Foreign students please use TOEFL code 54.
- Arrange for three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your abilities and achievements, especially relevant to graduate study in the mathematical sciences, to be sent to the Graduate Admissions office.
- Arrange for official transcripts of all undergraduate and previous graduate study to be sent to the Graduate Admissions office.
The deadline for a fall application is January 15 for receipt of ALL application materials.

If applying to more than one department, please mail a complete application packet for each department to the Graduate Admissions Office.
All application documents must be provided in English (either the original or translations of the original documents). If you are unable to secure translations to English, we recommend that you contact World Education Services.
