You are required to use antivirus software if you use the hopkins network. Such software is available for free download here:http://www.it.johnshopkins.edu/antivirus/
Mail setup - you are encouraged to use the university's mail server JHEM for incoming mail.
- JHEM can be used as an IMAP server with a mail client such as Mozilla Thunderbird information about this is available at this site: http://www.it.johnshopkins.edu/services/email/jhem/
- You can set up a convenient email alias instead of jhedid@jhu.edu Instructions may be found at the portal: http://my.johnshopkins.edu under myJhed tab under email alias
- You can have mail from your JHEM account forwarded to another account, e.g. a gmail account. Information is available at portal: http://my.johnshopkins.edu under myJhed tab.
Computing Lab (Whitehead 300) - several desktops with many application programs for student use. Typically, students use their own flash drives to save their work. Warning: if you put a flash use a computer in the lab, make sure it is virus-free.
Application software - various special deals are available for application software.

Network printers for general use 4 networked printers are available for use by faculty and grad students:
- Hector = 10.163.48.251 (HP LaserJet 4200) Whitehead 2nd floor
- Helen = 10.163.48.250 (HP LaserJet 4100) Whitehead 3rd floor - East end of building
- Hercules = 10.163.48.239 (HP Laser Jet 4200) Whitehead 3rd floor - AMS Computing Lab
- Rainbow - 10.163.48.247 (HP Color Laser Jet 3550) printer Whitehead 100
Ricoh 2060 scanner/photocopy/printer in Whitehead 100
Department server (jesse) - hostname: jesse-ssh.ams.jhu.edu
- Logins are done using SSH (secure shell) and file copying is done using SCP (secure file copy). Putty is a free SSH client you can download. Winscp is a free SCP client.
- Authentication (login/password) is based on JHED IDs
- Use the VPN (JHConnect) if connecting from outside the university
- Personal web pages are placed in your /home-page/public_html folder.
- The url of a page /homepage/public_html/mywebpage.htm would be http://www.ams.jhu.edu/~jhedid/mywebpage.htm
